“Europe At A Crossroads” – infographics about current challenges in Europe
Climate crisis and natural disasters, war and migration, restructuring of agriculture, sustainable energy production, efficient mobility, digitalization: Europe and its population face a number of challenges. In a democratic society, education about issues like these is of particular importance.
In this course, students explored and visualized a specific aspect of the semester’s topic: the current challenges facing Europe. They researched backgrounds, data, facts, numbers, chronological orders, and historical and recent developments, as well as future trends. This information was then translated into a story using detailed information graphics, such as maps, timelines, diagrams, charts, interactive visualisations, and animations, to present the content in an accessible and informative manner. Students should also brainstorm and sketch possible solutions to the challenges presented, and include sketches of future scenarios in their visualisations.
The result is a published infographic website on a self-chosen subtopic.
Soy has become a trend food over the last few years, as it is very popular not only with humans but also in the animal feed industry. Since Europe cannot meet this high demand itself, an enormous amount of soy is imported every year, which makes CO2 levels worse and worse and accelerates climate change. Hardly anyone is therefore aware that when animal products are consumed, the personal CO2 footprint worsens. But why exactly is this so?
What do we want to achieve?
With the help of our website, we would like to educate people about this current issue and make them more familiar with the topic of soy. Our core content is as follows:
Why is soy increasingly used as animal feed?
How much soy do we consume indirectly through our consumption of animal products and how bad is this for our climate?
What is the carbon footprint of soy and how could the increased cultivation of soy in Europe improve our climate?
By using different information graphics, we visualise the enormous numbers of soy cultivation and simplify complicated content.
About the website
Our website consists of a one-pager and several sub-pages, which go into more detail on a specific topic. The page begins with a topic introduction consisting of text and animation. As soon as the user starts scrolling, a fixed navigation bar automatically appears in the upper area, which is displayed as a burger menu on the smartphone. The entire website is responsive.
We have created our main graphic on the topic of indirect consumption in a circular grid. This makes it easy to compare units of measure. Our infographic is interactive. The user can select a product and the respective quantities are shown with the help of the circles. The visual appearance of the infographic adapts to the respective product.
There are other interactions and animations on our website. We want to make sure that users have fun on our website and enjoy learning about the topic and learning new things.
In summary, we have created a website with many info-graphics. The website can be explored in a fun way through animations and interactions. In this way, we want more people to engage with the topic of the dark side of soy.
