Conditions – Product concepts with shifting states – shaped by and responsive to human behavior.
The goal of the course was to design a product that transitions between states, integrating seamlessly into daily interactions and reflecting human behavior in use.
Product solutions play a key role in daily habits, adapting to transitions in areas such as household life, transportation, nutrition, travel, hygiene, etc. They shape our actions and, through their changing conditions, reveal functionality and origins, deepening our understanding of their function and meaning—ultimately fostering more sustainable interactions.
The interplay between products and their shifting states and our perception of them in daily use offers opportunities for sustainable and adaptive design.
How might we create a personal environment that offers comfort in outdoor settings?
In response to this question, our group developed an outdoor light that combines safety lighting with atmospheric lighting. The light aims to define personal space, provide orientation, and create a welcoming atmosphere, enhancing comfort and the overall quality of outdoor experiences. This project was developed as part of the Product Design course “Conditions.”
The initial sketches focused on the form and how the light can be comfortably worn on the body. We explored proportions, attachment possibilities, and the integration of curves to ensure the product feels natural while carrying and using it outdoors.
This exploded view reveals the structure and key components of our outdoor light, showing how functionality and design are integrated within a compact form.
The following images show the power button and battery indicator of our outdoor light. By long-pressing the button, the light turns on and displays the battery status. Short presses allow the brightness to be adjusted in three steps, while another long press turns the light off.
The following renderings demonstrate the two light modes of our outdoor light. In safety mode, the light provides clear, direct illumination to support orientation and visibility in outdoor environments. For ambient mode, the same light source is used, but a lampshade stored inside the housing can be taken out and inflated, creating a soft, voluminous shape that diffuses the light to produce a warm, comfortable atmosphere. This approach allows the product to switch seamlessly between functional safety lighting and an inviting ambient light, using one light source
The final image shows how the product was presented in the exhibition. The looks-like model displays the lamp on a 1:1 mannequin, while the works-like model on the table demonstrates the functioning light as well as the inflatable lampshade.
