Teilen statt Besitzen
Accessibility vs. Ownership
The course Process Design focuses on the design of processes and product-systems that shape how products and services are used. Rather than concentrating on individual objects, the course addresses the relationships between products, services, users, and systems.
Under the guiding theme “Accessibility vs. Ownership,” students develop concepts for products, services, and product–service systems that enable shared use and organize it in meaningful, long-term ways.
Outcomes
The projects demonstrate how process design can create sustainable alternatives to traditional ownership and consumption models. The results include:
products and systems designed for shared use
services that provide access without ownership
systems that support sharing, reuse, and repair
The projects highlight that sustainable design emerges where processes are consciously designed and rethought.
We investigated festivals – and found chaos.
After just a few days, huge amounts of trash are left behind: Cheap tents, camping equipment, and disposable products are often bought with the intention of leaving them behind. After several days of partying, the motivation to dismantle everything, carry it all back, and clean up is gone. At the same time, we observed a lack of structure, safety, and a
sense of community. Many young people dream of going to a festival but can‘t find suitable companions because their friends listen to different music or have other plans. Going alone is out of the question for many – the fear of insecurity, violence, or sexual assault is too big.
Our idea
Create a new festival experience – sustainable, connecting, and safe. How can we redesign the festival experience as a shared system, creating connection and safety while reducing waste, without restricting personal freedom?
Our Solution – A System of Three Connected Elements
Our solution consists of three parts that belong together and support each other. Each part has its own function, but only together they create a new festival experience. Our goal is to make festivals safer, more sustainable, and more community-oriented. To achieve this, we combine an app, a tent rental system, and an extended NFC festival wristband. Together, these elements form a well-designed system that connects people, reduces waste, and creates more structure and safety – without limiting the freedom and fun of the festival experience.
The FESTIVALL App
The app connects people and strengthens the community. Users create a verified profile, add their music tastes and preferences, and find matching individuals or groups to attend a festival together. They can also choose specific group types, such as all-female, mixed, or small groups. The app supports solo travelers by helping them connect and feel safer.
Users can add parent contacts and set check-in reminders, which send push notifications without tracking their activity.
The Rent Containers
Visitors can easily rent a tent through the app. The tent is reserved before the festival and will be ready on site in a special container. With the NFC chip in the festival wristband, the tent can be picked up and returned contactlessly at the end of the festival. The process is simple and quick. Cleaning and organization are handled by the system. This way, we avoid single-use tents, reduce waste, and save visitors from carrying and cleaning their equipment.
The Extended NFC Festival Wristband
The existing festival wristband is upgraded with an integrated NFC chip and plays a central role in our system. It connects the digital app with the real festival experience. With the NFC chip, users can easily and contactlessly pick up and return their rented tents. The wristband also serves as personal identification and access tool, combining organization, safety, and sustainability in one simple solution.
Together, these three elements form FESTIVAL, a networked system that strengthens
community, increases safety, and reduces waste.
