Kodak, Nokia, Tamagotchi, etc. – Many brands that were once influential and successful have now lost their relevance. They failed to keep up with technological or social developments, did not recognize new needs, or simply lost touch with the times. In this course, we take a look at such brands and their products, place them in a new context, and rethink them.
The students independently selected a brand that is no longer relevant or, in their view, offers hidden innovation potential. First, they examined why the brand and its products are no longer relevant today. Then they identified the brand’s core – the actual idea or emotional meaning behind the brand’s origins.
Based on this core, students developed new product ideas that add value in today’s social, technological, and ecological context, solve current problems, and at the same time reinterpret the character of the brand.
momo is a simple communication system designed for people living in senior homes.
It makes social connection easier, more visible, and more intuitive.
The system consists of two devices. One is portable and allows residents to see where
others are gathering in shared spaces, such as the dining room or lounge.
This helps them decide when and where they would like to join. The second device is
placed outside each resident’s door.
It gently glows to signal openness to social interaction, or remains unlit to indicate a
preference for privacy.
The project reimagines the brand Realistic, once known for its walkie-talkies, drawing
inspiration from its core value: connection without the need for smartphones.
When momo is turned face down, with the screen facing against a surface, it
automatically deactivates.
At the same time, the light outside the resident’s door switches off, clearly signaling
that they do not wish to be contacted or socialize.
After turning momo face up, the screen activates.
Simple icons appear, showing where people are gathering and how many are present
in each shared space. This allows residents to easily decide where they would like to go
and join others for social interaction.
The second part of the system is the device located outside each resident’s door.
When momo is turned face up and activated, the door device glows softly, signaling
a desire for social connection and welcoming a visit.
This feature is especially important for residents with limited mobility who may not be
able to leave their rooms, allowing them to express openness to social interaction
without needing to move.
