Redefining Elderly Living Spaces

This design guide aims to bridge a significant gap in the representation of elderly individuals within the design field, specifically in the context of retirement houses. It explores the fundamental question, “How might we enhance the world for the elderly and encourage their integration into society?” The question holds significant importance as today’s youth will inevitably become tomorrow’s elderly. By striving for positive change and improving the lives of older individuals, we can inspire and motivate future projects to create a brighter future for all.

In collaboration with two local retirement homes in Germany, in-depth insights were gathered to understand the needs, preferences, and aspirations of the elderly residents. The research conducted enabled the identification of specific challenges faced by the elderly in retirement houses.

Through extensive research and analysis, a set of ten key design principles has been identified to guide the creation of spaces and furniture that meet the unique and specific needs of this demographic. The motivation behind this guide stems from the understanding that well-designed spaces and furniture can greatly enhance the quality of life, comfort, and sense of belonging for the elderly residing in retirement houses.
