“Girih” means “Knot” and is one of the major forms of geometric patterns in islamic art. The pattern uses lines to create polygons which then form overlapping shapes.
Art in Islam mostly avoids figurative depictions. Therefore a wide range of abstract graphical elements were created. Islamic art invented one of the most intricate geometric patterns. The studies in geometry and math lead to a complex art form and craftsmanship.
In tile making for islamic architecture, “Girih” patterns were used to shape tiles. This is a analog exploration of these patterns and shapes. Different angled lines cut trough the tile and create shapes that flow, curved over the surface of the tiles. The connection of the tiles creates more patterns that can only be seen in then and not in a single tile.
