„Reinventing the Film Experience“ - we design a digital product to experience films.
In the Digital Products course we think about what the future of the film experience could look like and develop our own imaginary product for it.
We asked ourselves questions like:
How can movies (and TV shows) be discovered, organized, catalogued, categorized, sorted, consumed, collected, discussed and shared?
How does one learn more about the filmmakers, actors, about social, political and technological contexts and contextual information?
How might we create an experience between the real world and the film you’re watching?
What visual aspects would help make information more accessible and engaging?
What features would be useful before, during and after watching a movie?
How do you watch movies alone or with friends in the future?
Current technological developments such as AI generated content, Metaverse, Voice UI, Gesture Control, NFTs, Foldable Devices, 3D Displays, Holograms and AR Glasses can be included. How can these be used in a useful and meaningful way? Which technology can offer us advantages in conveying and communicating information? What does the interface look like?
In four phases – understand it, think it, build it, ship it – we develop concepts and prototypes of future film experiences.
A new way of storytelling. Your choice. Your movie.
unscript is a movie platform designed for people, who don’t just want to watch a normal movie. It is for those, who want to be a part of a story, who want to change the direction of the movie.
When thinking about the future, VR and AR are strong components of new technology and living. With that in mind, unscript is a virtual reality experience, where you can watch movies with your friends from far away.
You can navigate through the interface with body movements and hand gestures. You can choose movies from any genre. The movie can be experienced together with friends, no matter how far away they are. Before the movie starts, a preset created by a “remixer” is selected. Of these, there are four choices each in many different directions such as Love, Thriller, Action and co.
Before watching the movie you choose a preset that was made by a “remixer”. Every “remixer” watched the movie and chose points where the movie could be changed and gave it their own option on how it could go on. For every movie you have four “remixer” options from which you can choose one.
During the movie, you get to different points (chosen by the “remixer”), where the movie could change its story direction. You and your friends have to decide on one option. The majority chooses. The story will go on in the direction that was chosen. And that will happen a few times (how many times is on the “remixer”). To prevent the problem that the movie stops during the decision making, the movie won’t completely stop but will go on without content. Just like it’s waiting for your choice.
The choice parts are more movementbased. Imagine you are sitting on your couch in real life and in a VR world. How can you move to make a decision? Lean towards one side, move your arms, throw an imaginative ball or stand up. There are endless possibilities.
At the end you get a summary of your movie storyline and your decisions you made on the way. How many people chose the same? How many endings are possible, when you take a different option?
