Bites is an innovative microlearning app that accompanies young people, career starters and career changers on their personal learning journey for future-oriented soft skills. It encourages them to build on existing skills, acquire new ones and apply them practically in everyday life. Bites thus supports everyone in developing their individual skill potential.
The underlying problem
The world is undergoing exponential change. This increasing dynamic has made it difficult to make precise predictions about the future, leading to uncertainty for many people. However, a lot of the major challenges we face are primarily human in nature and not due to technological shortcomings.
The future therefore becomes a question of “Humanness” and not of technology.
The solution
This is why we need the further development of human skills – also called Future Skills – to prepare individuals for an unpredictable future and enable positive development on a personal, social and global level. In our app these skills are taught in a practical way and help to shape a shared future worth living in an increasingly digitalized world.
Screens
Home
After an onboarding that explains the benefits, structure and functions of the app, the user will be greeted by the home screen. There are four personalized suggestions that directly encourage the user to take action.
Explore
In the Explorer, all of the app’s content is mapped to the 13 Future Skills categories. This allows users to choose what they want to learn. Each skill is visualized by a unique cookie in the cookie-verse.
Library
When a learning unit is completed, favorited, or bookmarked, it is placed in the library. This allows the user to repeat content and keep track of what they have achieved.
Profile
The profile provides information about the time spent, the number of units completed and the number of consecutive days the user has spent in the app. Routines can also be created and managed to remind the user of selected learning units at specific times.
Bites & Sips
The application distinguishes between theoretical (Bites) and practical (Sips) learning units. Bites are conveyed through microlearning in the form of short audios, videos or texts, followed by a quiz for self-testing. Sips on the other hand are practical tasks, exercises and methods that are used in everyday (working) life and are often suggested directly after a Bite.
Visual Design
The logo represents an open mouth with three teeth, representing us team members and the three categories of feeling, acting and thinking in which we categorized the Future Skills. The main font used is N27, a modern, futuristic font from atipo foundry that works well in large sizes as well as small in body text on a mobile phone screen. This is complemented by the Nanum Pen Script, a Google font that appears in the app when when features are first introduced to help users with their first steps. The cookies are part of the cookie-verse, the app’s explorer where all Future Skills can be accessed.
